Extension of performance grant

In some situations, you can get an extra year of performance grant (basic grant, supplementary grant, and student travel product) in case of study delay.

Conditions

You can apply for an extension of the performance grant if:

• you are able to obtain a diploma, but not before your performance grant is due to expire, and
• you have fallen behind with your studies as a direct result of your own special medical circumstances.

No possibility of extension

You cannot apply for an extension of the performance grant if:

• you are, or were, pregnant and you experience a normal pregnancy, or
• you switch to another study programme, leaving you with an insufficient grant to fund your new programme, or
• you do not fall behind with your studies until after your performance grant has expired.

Apply via student counsellor or study advisor

Contact your student counsellor or study advisor as soon as possible if you fall behind with your studies, even if the cause is not entirely clear yet.

Only in exceptional situations can your student counsellor or study advisor apply for a performance grant provision on your behalf. A medical certificate and a statement from the educational institution are always required. The student counsellor or study advisor and DUO will assess whether you meet conditions. Were you disenrolled from your programme more than 5 years ago? Then the educational institution may not be able to support your application, because your study data are no longer available.

You can apply for an extension once for every educational level: once for MBO and once for higher education.

If you apply for the extension retroactively, you cannot receive any money for the student travel product, or the travel product itself, to cover the ‘missed’ period.

What happens next

If your application is approved, you will receive student finance similar to before the extension.

• MBO: You receive 1 extra year of basic grant, supplementary grant, and travel product.
• University or HBO: You receive 1 extra year of basic grant, supplementary grant, and travel product. If you are taking an Associate Degree, you get 6 extra months.
• Are you eligible for an extension and did you receive student finance before 1 September for a programme in higher education? And were you not eligible for a basic grant because the student loan system applied? If you graduate within 10 years, your student loan, or part of it, will also be cancelled.
